Chianti Classico: The Heart of the Tuscan Beauty
The Chianti region is probably well known in the world only for its marvellous wine. But not many people know that the Chianti Region is also rich in history and natural beauties, like the pictoresque landscape of its hills or its medieval villages of incomparable charm. This region has an ancient farming tradition that produces wine, cheese, cold cuts and excellent meat renowned and appreciated all over the world even today.
Greve in Chianti
Our first stop will be Greve in Chianti, where we you will enjoy the charm of its historic square flanked by open galleries and wander around the characteristic shops of local handicrafts and the typical Chianti products.
The main square is also fronted by numerous medieval buildings, including th Chiesa Santa Croce, a church built in the 11th century and rebuilt, by the Duke of Lucca, in 14th century, after being burned.
Just two kilometers ahead, there is a beautiful fortification, the Castle of Verrazzano, that was then turned in a villa in the 17th century.
Castellina in Chianti: Visiting and Wine Tasting
We continue with a stop in Castellina in Chianti, a characteristic ancient hamlet perched on a hill, where we visit a suggestive and historical cellar.
Just outside the village, in one of the most famous vineyards of the area, you will be guided through a tasting of different wines of the Chianti area, extra virgin olive oil on Tuscan bread, vin santo with “cantuccini” locally produced and lavender honey.
You will enjoy a really luxury degustation experience, inside the unforgettable and magical tuscan atmosphere.
Monteriggioni: a Jump in the Middle Ages
Proceeding along a panoramic road we will reach the picturesque town of Monteriggioni, a small medieval jewel still surrounded by its ancient walls.
Those roughly circular walls, totalling a length of about 570 metres that follow the natural contours of the hillock, were built between 1213 and 1219. There are 14 towers on square bases set at equidistance and two portals or gates. One gate, the Porta Fiorentina, opens toward Florence to the north, and the other, the Porta Romana, faces Rome to the south. The main street within the walls connects the two gates in a roughly straight line.
The main square of the town, Piazza Roma, houses a church with a simple, romanesque façade. Other houses, some in the Renaissance style, face into the same square, while smaller streets give way to public gardens fronted by other houses and small businesses.
Monteriggioni is also referenced by Dante Alighieri in its masterpiece “Divine Comedy”
