What is Chianti?
Chianti is a wine region in the heart of Tuscany, between the provinces of Pisa (in the west), Arezzo (in the east), Siena (in the south) and Florence (in the north). When we say Chianti, we refer to the wine produced in this area. Today this region is divided in 8 sub-zones, where each wine differ from the others according to the percentage of grape varieties. The constant, however, is the Sangiovese grape, present in all the Chianti wines. The Etruscans were the first ones to understand the importance of wine cultivation and after them the Romans kept developing the area in this sense. Chianti Classico was the first official Chianti wine zone in 1716 declared by the Grand Duke Cosimo III from the famous and rich Medici’s family. For this reason, we consider the Chianti Classico to be the father of all Chianti wines.
What is a Supertuscan Wine?
When we say “Super Tuscan” we refer to an unofficial categorization to describe red Tuscan wines made with non-indigenous grapes such as Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This definition was born in the 70’s, when some producers started producing wine out of the approved grapes, using a blending of local grape varieties with international ones. Today this mix gives birth to many kinds of qualities and excellent flavours. The Super Tuscan wine is usually produced in small quantities and that explains why it is often quite expensive and not easy to export abroad. It is therefore more probable to be able to taste this kind of wine in local wineries on private tours like this one.
