What is a Super-Tuscan Wine?

Super Tuscan wine is an unofficial categorization used to identify small productions of wines that are made combining local grape varieties with uncommon blends in Tuscany, like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This combination allows to create wines with excellent tastes. The small production makes these wines really expensive and really difficult to export, so you can taste them only in local wineries, maybe with us.

Discovering Montalcino, the Hometown of Brunello Wine

Then we’ll stop in the medieval town of Montalcino, became famous all over the world for its notorious wine “Brunello di Montalcino”.

The town of Montalcino is built on a hill. Atop the hill, there is a marvellous medieval fortress, with his boudary walls, designed with a pentagonal layout by the Sienese architects Mino Foresi and Domenico di Feo.  The towers stand high on the hill and offer a majestic view of the entire “Val d’Orcia”.

The Historic Centre of Montalcino

Picturesque Moltalcino’s historic centre has narrow cobblestone streets with dozens of wineries and artisans’ shops selling local products. Of course here wine is a must.

We will also have the opportunity to visit the Duomo (cathedral), dedicated to San Salvatore, a 14th Century church renewed in the 19th-century with a Neoclassical façade. After that, we will see the Piazza della Principessa Margherita, where stands the Palazzo dei Priori or Palazzo Comunale, now town hall, that incorporates a tall medieval tower.

Montalcino is divided, like most medieval Tuscan cities, into quarters called “contrade”: Borghetto, Travaglio, Pianello and Ruga.

Twice a year they organize an archery contest under the walls of the Fortress, conducted in Medieval dresses, with lords and ladies of each contrada who accompany the proceedings. It seems to make a jump back in history.
