However, in case of not accesible streets, we will agree on another meeting point. After boarding our comfortable minivan, we will drive to the Chianti Classico Area. This hilltop town is famous for its fine towers. 14 of them still stand today in the village, but in the past there were 72 towers. They symbolized wealth. Indeed, San Gimignano was quite a rich trading centre in the Middle Ages. Moreover, it was important for many pilgrims on their way to Rome. In fact, the well know route Via Francigena passed through here. It was a religious path bringing people from Northern Europe (Canterbury, UK) to Rome and then Jerusalem. The historic centre and its towers belong today to the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
