From Montecatini to the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Campo dei Miracoli
Our tour will start at your accomodation, where our driver will pick you up. From there, you will get on our comfortable minivan with a/c.
The first visit of our program will be the academic city of Pisa. Many students decide to move here in order to study medicine, engineering etc. We will go straight to the most important attraction in Pisa, Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles). This is the square containing the big architectural complex with the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral and the Baptistry.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower is the Cathedral Bell Tower, today leaning to 13.5 feet. The Tower was built in a perfect vertical position, but it started leaning with the terrain sinking. In the past many restoration works have been made to stabilize the building. If you wish, we can purchase the Leaning Tower tickets, so that you can have the chance to admire the beautiful landscape and the city from its top. There are 294 marble steps in order to reach the top of the tower , but the view is surely worth the effort. Moreover, the Leaning Tower is considered one of the seven wonders of the medieval world.
Campo dei Miracoli and the precious medieval old town Pisa
Campo dei Miracoli (the Field of Miracles or Square of Miracles, as per the words of the Italian Poet Gabriele d’Annunzio when he saw the square from the height of a plane) is a marvellous architectural complex. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site for its beauty in 1987. Besides the Leaning Tower, built as an independent Bell Tower behind the Cathedral, we find the Duomo (dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta), the Baptistery and the Camposanto (the Graveyard). The Cathedral was the first to be built in the 12th century in a typical Romanesque style. A nice green lawn surrounds the buildings and many students and locals use lie down here and relax during the sunny days.
Afterwards, you can choose to either visit the old town on your own or to have us escort you by minivan/car. In this last case, we will bring you to the second most important square in Pisa, Piazza Dei Cavalieri. Additionally, we will show you the Lungarno, the romantic streets along the Arno river, full of historical buildings and shops.
Before moving on to Lucca, we will have a pleasant stop for ice scream at “I Coltelli”, the most popular ice cream shop in Pisa.
The Square of Miracles in Pisa.
Lucca, the City with a hundred Churches
We will continue the tour visiting Lucca, the also called the city with a hundred Churches. The reason is the large number of religious buildings in the old centre within the fortified walls. Among these, San Michele’s (St Micheal) Church. The most important shopping street is called Fillungo. Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is the heart of the town, a medieval square mantaining the shape of the old Roman Amphitheatre located there. Indeed, the square features the shape of an ancient arena. Here you can find today many nice bars and restaurants.
Lucca and its historic walls
The ancient city of Lucca features wide high walls around the city centre, dating back to the 17th century. Today they do not serve a defensive reason anymore, but on top you find a beautiful green lawn. Locals love to walk around the city centre and admire it from the old walls. The park is 4 km long. If you wish to see the town from another perspective, you can rent bikes for you and you can ride it on the old walls around the town.
Free Time Shopping in Lucca
Lucca is the perfect town to explore on foot. Indeed, it is not possible to drive a car within the walls. In the old town you find many shops, restaurants, bar and elegant palaces and towers that show the history of the city. In Lucca you will enjoy some free time to discover the city and do what you prefer.
It is possible to pre-book tickets for Leaning Tower. Please inform us at the moment of the booking. Tickets are subject to availability. Children under 9 are not allowed to enter and medium-big size bags are to be left at the entrance.
