The narrow streets and the old stone buildings will bring you back to the Middle Ages.
This town is very famous for its white wine, an ancient variety of Vernaccia grape growing on the sandstone hillsides.
Other typical products from this area are saffron and the so called Golden Ham (dry-cured ham made with saffron from San Gimignano).
What You Will See during Your Tour in San Gimignano
The historic centre of San Gimignano has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1990. Among the reasons we find the well preserved buildings within the medieval walls, dating back to the 13th century.
In fact, you can find in the old town great examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. But the main feature of this village are surely the unique 13 towers, that every visitor can recognize in the distance.
You will learn more about the history of the town and its main attractions.
First of all, the main town square, called Piazza della Cisterna.
Secondly, the Piazza Duomo, with the beautiful Collegiata Cathedral and its bell tower.
The Town Hall is very close to these two squares. Last but not least, the Church of Sant’Agostino, where you can admire many artworks from early Italian Renaissance period.
Volterra: an Unforgettable Medieval Town to Visit in Tuscany
Volterra is a charming town situated in the province of Pisa and located on a hill surrounded by majestic fortification walls.
It is well known for its alabaster production and for its Etruscan origins confirmed by the many remains in the area. While approaching to the village you will notice many alabaster quarries along the unique clay hills. Many local artisans here use this raw stone to produce beautiful handmade jewelry and souvenirs you can find in every shop.
Volterra is probably one of the most interesting towns you can visit during your Trip in Tuscany, where you can walk into history.
This stone made city was founded more than 3000 years ago passing from the Etruscan to the Roman domination during the mid-3rd century before Christ.
What You Will Admire during Your Tour in Volterra
In Volterra you will admire the impressive Roman Theatre, built during the 1st century b.ch. and excavated in the 1950s.
We will then lead you through the narrow streets and small squares of the town to discover:
- Piazza dei Priori, with the famous Palazzo dei Priori
- Palazzo Pretorio (external visit)
- Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
- Etruscan City Walls with the ancient Etruscan port
