San Gimignano: Discover the Town of the Fine Towers in a small group

San Gimignano is famous as the Town of the Fine Towers, 14 medieval skyscrapers once symbol of wealth. Indeed the construction of these towers originates from the rivalry between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. These rich families started builduing high towers in the 12th century to show their economic power. By the end of the medieval period there were totally 72 towers. This trend finished in 1255 when the law decided that no tower could be higher than the Torre Rognosa (51 mt high). Over the years many towers were destroyed, most of them during the Second World War.
San Gimignano will also surprise you for the good wine and food produced locally, since the town is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.

Make sure you don’t miss the panoramic views, the best gelato and the local shops that sell ceramic, leather and local products.

Visit of Siena during your Day Tour from Lucca

After visiting San Gimignano, we will visit one of the most popular cities in Tuscany. Siena is very rich in medieval history and art and it is also famous for the Palio di Siena. The Palio is a traditional horse race taking place in Piazza del Campo and based on the ancient rivalry between the 17 town’s districts (contrade). Since the horses run for three laps of the square only, the race only takes a little time. But locals get ready for this event the whole year round.
In the old town you can walk in the narrow streets of brick buildings, background for many scenes of Quantum of Solace (2008) from the James Bond series. Click here for more details about the movie locations.

Main attractions you will see during Your Day Tour in Siena

The main attraction in Siena is surely Piazza del Campo: the famous shell-shape square where the traditional horse race Palio takes place. In fact, the square represents the heart of the town. Here you can find the Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) with the massive brick tower Torre del Mangia. In addition, you can see here the great Fonte Gaia, a marvellous marble fountain.
Another important attraction is the Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the most beautiful Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals in Italy. Its multicolored marble façade and the inside (internal visit not included) will take you attention with masterpieces signed by Donatello and Michelangelo. The Cathedral is worth a visit for its stunning marble floor designed by Renassaince masters.
