Discover the medieval San Gimignano on our Private Day Tour
Our first stop will be San Gimignano, a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena. Locals use to call it the Manhattan of the The Middle Ages, because the town is surrounded by 13 medieval towers. Those were the symbol of power and wealth in the past. Indeed the most important merchant families used to build high towers to show their economic stability. But San Gimignano will surprise you not only for its long history. Due to the many vineyards and olive trees in the area, also gastronomy is very important here. Therefore, the typical products you should not miss are saffron and the singular Golden Ham (dry-cured ham with saffron).
What You Will See during Your Day Tour in San Gimignano
Within the walls, the well-preserved buildings and churches are great examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Our guide will tell you about the history of the town and of its most famous buildings.
First of all, Piazza della Cisterna, the main square of the town. Secondly Piazza Duomo with the Collegiata Cathedral and its bell tower.
Last but not least, the Church of Sant’Agostino, housing many artworks from early Italian Renaissance. Therefore, the historical centre of San Gimignano has been declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Volterra: another jewel town in Tuscany
Volterra is a hilltop town, famous for its alabaster production and for the Etruscan wall ruins still standing there. Indeed its old history will take your attention, because the Etruscans populated this area since the 8th century BC until it became a very important trading centre.
Regarding the alabaster production, you will be able to see some of its alabaster quarries on the unique clay hills in the distance. This stone is often used by local craftsmen to produce beautiful handmade artifacts.
