Since we can enter the cruise terminal in Livorno, we will meet you directly at the pier. San Gimignano: a medieval gem in Tuscany

Today many consider this tiny village to be one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Tuscany. San Gimignano rises on the top of a hill, about 70 km from Livorno. In the distance, you can recognize it for its 14 towers. Because of this singular skyline, the town is usually called the Manhattan of Middle Ages. These towers symbolized economic stability in the past. Indeed, it was very expensive to build a stone tower and the richest families build them to show their power to others. There were originally 72 towers but many were destroyed during the centuries. They could be house towers, bell towers and watching towers.
In the Middle Ages many pilgrims used to come here because of its position along the famous route from Canterbury (England) to Rome, the Via Francigena.
The most beautiful square in the town is Piazza della Cisterna with its central well.

Local products of San Gimignano

The town of San Gimignano is on the Worlds Heritage List of UNESCO since 1990 for its historical beauty and well-preserved buildings.
However, the town of the fine towers is famous not only for its history, but also for its Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a white wine produced here. Additionally, this wine was the first one in the Italian wine history to get the DOGC (Denomination of Controlled Origin) in 1996.
Other local products are saffron and the golden ham (cured-dry ham with saffron from here).

Itinerary:

Departure From Cruise Terminal in Livorno Port

9:15 am approx.- Pick up outside your cruise at the pier. We have permission to enter the Cruise Terminal. Then we start our Bella Toscana – Chianti and San Gimignano with Light-Lunch From Livorno and we drive to the Chianti Classico Region. This area is located between Florence and Siena. You will get info about the first Italian wine regulation and the different wine labels like Docg, Doc and Igt.

First Winery in Chianti Classico

11:00 am – We get to the first winery through the beautiful Tuscan countryside with its rolling hills and vineyards. You will learn about the winemaking process and meet the family owner of this property. You will appreciate the efforts and the passion of the family members in their business. There will be a 4-wine tasting and after that, we will move to the next winery.

Second Winery in Chianti Classico

12:40 pm – The second winery is located in an enchanting area at a very beautiful villa. Here you will know more about Chianti Classico and Supertuscan wines. In fact, an expert will tell you about the way of producing wine today, according to the old and more modern traditions. You will taste 4 different wines and enjoy your Light Lunch at this winery some local products. Among these, you will have Pecorino (Sheep Cheese), ham, salami and the famous bruschetta with Extra virgin Olive Oil and fresh tomatoes. You will also try their great balsamic vinegard.

Visit San Gimignano

3 pm – Visit of the medieval Village of San Gimignano. Discover its old towers and its narrow stone alleys and squares.

Return to Your Cruise in Livorno Port

5:30 pm – We will drop off you outside your Cruise Ship (Please consider that we can adapt the timings to your cruise schedule).

Our private tour was on the first stop of a 10 day cruise. It was hands down the best tour! Michael was very knowledgeable of Tuscany and the 2 wineries we visited were fantastic. Greve was OK. Our favorite winery was a small family operation and after the private tour, the wife of the owner served us a delicious 3 course lunch outside under huge shade trees overlooking the countryside. The best day!!!
