Visit San Gimignano, the Manhattan of the Middle Ages

Firstly we approach this medieval town, you understand why people call it the Manhattan of the Middle Ages. Indeed, you will see 14 stone towers rising from the hill. These towers were synonym of power in the past and the richest families used to create high towers to show their wealth. In fact, it was very expensive to build and maintain a tower. However, many pilgrims visited San Gimignano in the past because of its location. As a matter of fact, the old Via Francigena runs here. It was the old pilgrim route going from Canterbury to Rome through Switzerland and France.
This town belongs to UNESCO for its well-preserved buildings and artistic value. San Gimignano is famous for the white wine produced here, Vernaccia. Also other local products are worth a taste, like saffron and golden ham (cured-dry with local saffron).
