The Cinque Terre villages along the Ligurian Coast
When we say Cinque Terre, we refer to five old villages along the Ligurian Coast. They are Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. To the UNESCO’s area belong also Portovenere and three tiny islands, Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. Moreover, this region is a marine protected area. The common feature is the charming atmosphere created by the many colored houses along the coast. Surrounding them, you find a very romantic environment with terraced vineyards and rows of olive trees.
The charming villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza and Monterosso
Usually our first stop is in the southernmost villages of either Manarola or Riomaggiore (weather permitting). Riomaggiore is the first village from the south, with parallel colorful stone towers on the cliffs. Manarola is the oldest one, with very narrow streets and pretty squares. Vernazza has a small natural harbor, a small beach and a church facing the marina. Very often people consider it the most elegant town for its portals and facades. Monterosso in the biggest village and is famous for its Fegina Beach, the only sandy beach along the coast.
In the old streets of these beautiful villages, you can buy typical products in the local shops. You should try the Ligurian pesto sauce, Limoncino, Honey, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Wine.
Enjoy Monterosso and its sandy beach
Monterosso is the northernmost the Cinque Terre (Five Lands). A small promontory divides the town in two parts. On one side, you find the famous Fegina Beach. It is used by many locals during the summer season. On the other side, you find the old town with romantic narrow alleys. They are full of local shops, bars and restaurants.
You will enjoy some free time here. Our Staff will be glad to suggest you where to go and what to do. If you wish, you can even relax on the beach or swim in the beautiful clear waters! According to Forbes (2006), it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
In Monterosso, you also find ruins of the Old Castle, a Capuchin Convent and the Church of St John.
**There is no hiking on this tour. However, we do not recommend it to people with walking difficulties.
