Chianti Wines: DOCG Wines, IGT wines
The most common varieties of grape in the Chianti region are those with red berries, including the famous Sangiovese, it used for the production of a wide range of wine like the Chianti (DOCG: Denomination origin controlled and guaranteed) and other no less important classified as DOC ( Denomination origin controlled) and IGT .
Sangiovese grape has ancient origins , probably attributable to the Etruscan period, but it’s 16th century that acquired its popularity and diffusion.
This type of vineyards is distinguished into two categories:
–Sangiovese Grosso ( big) : used to produce the famous Brunello of Montalcino
–Sangiovese Piccolo (small) : the most common one ,cultivated for the production of mostly of red wines, including the famous Chianti.
The distinguishing characteristics of Sangiovese grape are varied and depend on many different factors, including the weather and the altitude at which it’s grown.
This grape variety prefers medium hilly terrain and poor fertility, also clayey and dry during maturation.
The hills of Chianti ( also well known as the Chianti mountains) are a short riding mountain range between the provinces of Florence, Siena and Arezzo, following the eastern border of the Chianti region with the Valdarno and the Val di Chiana .
The geographical area of Chianti is divided into 8 districts:
– Colli Fiorentini
