The villages are:
the most southern village of the Cinque Terre. Above all the name derives from the stream that flows through the valley, the Rivus Maior (biggest river) which today flows under the main street, but up the early 20th century it was in view. The houses were connected by bridge and for this reason the town was known as “Little Venice”.
The town with a layout similar to that of Riomaggiore, was built on the banks of a stream, the Rio Groppo, which still flows under the main streets. Explore the narrow alleys and pretty pastel squares that epitomize the beauty of the area
With Monterosso, Vernazza is the oldest town of the Cinque Terre. The first mentions of it date back to 1080. Walking through the streets you can still see the remains of this memorable medieval past. In Piazzetta dei Caduti center, there is a large millstone recalling the agricultural vocation of the town, which is one of the most famed producers of olive oil and wine. One of those is Vernaccia, which has been appreciated since the Middle Ages.
It’s the oldest village in Cinque Terre. It’s also the largest and most capacious for visiting and accommodations. The town is divided in two nuclei. The separation is visible whether you arrive by sea, train or private transportation.
Firstly, the new part is “Fegina”, where there are the beaches and many hotels. From this side of the town an enjoyable promenade leads to the area of the Gigante (The giant).
Secondly, the old town of Monterosso can be reached by turning left and going through the tunnel. In the original nucleo of the city you can see the remains of the ancient castrum and the citadel. You can reach the top of the hill by taking the stairway leading to the convent of the Capuchin friars and the Church of San Francesco.
In addition you can also reach the Doria‘s castle, from where you will have a breaking view on the sea coast, looking at Monterosso, the last village of Cinque Terre National park.
After that, remember that Monterosso has one of the most beautiful beaches in the world (Forbes 2006).
