On the Road to Garfagnana: the Devil’s Bridge

We will travel along a panoramic road through the countryside of tuscany to enter in the Garfagnana region. During the road, you will be enchanted by marvellous green valleys, old medieval towers and rife chestnut trees. Following the course of the river Serchio, we will have our second stop to the medieval Devil’s Bridge, near the town of Borgo a Mozzano.

Also known as Ponte della Maddalena (Maddalena’s Bridge), this bridge was built in the XII century and is a living expression of the medieval engineering. The structure has asymmetric arches, disposed in a way called at ‘donkey back’. The Devil’s Bridge is one of the region’s most mysterious and exciting landmarks where you will be able to discover the chilling legend that haunts this ancient structure. As you can read on the official website, a popular legend says that a master mason begun the building of the bridge, but soon noticed that he would not be able to complete the work for the fixed day. Scared for the possible consequences, he invoked the Devil asking him help. The Devil accepted to complete the bridge in a night, in change of the spirit of the first that will cross it. The contract was signed but the constructor, full of remorse, confess himself with a religious, that advised him to let cross the bridge for first to a pig. So the Devil was defeated and he disappeared in the deepness of the river.

The Medieval Castle in Garfagnana

Due to its strategic position, the Garfagnana was in the past an important area to keep control over the territory. So, in this area of the Tuscany you can find many forts and fortresses, that can bring you back in time to the Medieval period. Every castle in Garfagnana offers a lot to see in terms of architecture and culture. The most famous fortresses in this area are: the Ariostesca Fort in Castelnuovo, the Verrucole Fort and the Castle at Mont’Alfonso.

We will enjoy a visit in a Medieval Castle, discovering its history and admiring all its beauty.

Barga: an Ancient but Charming Village in Tuscany

Our last stop for this tour will be the village of Barga, one of the most enchanting medieval village in Tuscany.  The Italian Touring Club has recently assigned the “orange flag” of the “Migliori borghi d’Italia” (“Best Villages of Italy”), an important sign to recognize the peculiarity of its beauty and of its quality.

Barga has several civic and religious buildings to visit, but the two most important things to see are the Teatro dei Differenti and Casa Pascoli. Barga is, in fact, the hometown of Giovanni Pascoli, one of the most famous italian poets. Barga has also a marvellous Cathedral named Collegiata di San Cristoforo considered one of the most important Romanesque examples in all of Tuscany.

Barga is also named “The most Scottish town in Italy,” after the hills and reminiscence of Scotland (additionally, there are many red telephone booths lying around Barga’s streets).
