This tour will take you into the heart of Tuscany. Passing through rolling hills, with this tour you will discover the charm of Volterra, the ancient Etruscan town and Alabaster land that overlooks the entire valley.

Volterra: an Unforgettable Town to Visit in Tuscany

Volterra is a walled mountaintop town, famous for its alabaster production and for its Etruscan walls of which there are stillstanding ruins.

Volterra is probably one of the most interesting town to visit during your Trip in Tuscany, thanks to its ancient history. In fact, Volterra was inhabited since the Iron Age and has been continuously inhabitated as a city since the 8th century BC, under the Etruscan domination.

During the panoramic road to Volterra, you will see its unique clay hills, where there are a lot of quarries of alabaster. As said, alabaster is one of the most used raw material from local craftsmen to make beautiful handmade artifacts. From wherever you reach the town, the drive will surprise you with spectacular landscapes, colours and shapes changing at the season’s rythm. As you will see, this city is surreally perched high up on the “Balze” (layers of sandstone cliffs) and is mainly built of stones.

What You Will Admire during Your Private Tour in Volterra

Once arrived in Volterra, our expert guide will let you admire the impressive Roman Theatre, built during the 1st century bc and excavated in the 1950s, and he will lead you through the narrow streets and small squares of the town to discover:

  • Piazza dei Priori, with the famous Palazzo dei Priori
  • the Palazzo Pretorio (external)
  • the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
  • the Etruscan City Walls with the ancient Etruscan port
  • the Medicean Fortress

Probably you don’t know that the mysterious atmosphere of Volterra has inspired the writer Stephanie Meyerthe in her famous novel “New Moon”, which was made into the movie of the famous saga “Twilight”.

Your Free Time For Shopping or Lunch (not Included) in Volterra

It will be a fascinating walk through Etruscan, Medieval and Renaissance courts, during which you will visit the traditional shops of alabaster and local crafts. In Volterra you will have free time for your shopping or to get lost in the history of this town.

The Theatre of Andrea Bocelli, in Lajatico

Volterra and Andrea Bocelli’s Theatre Tour in Tuscany in Small Groups will continue with a panoramic stop in the hills around Volterra to visit the open-air amphitheater created by the famous tenor Andrea Bocelli. The “Teatro del Silenzio” (Thatre of Silence) is nestled in the heart of the Tuscan land, near the village of Lajatico where the famous artist was born. The theatre hosts a concert by Bocelli, its honorary president, once every July, while remaining silent the rest of the year.
